The Atlantic Ocean Road is only 8.3 km long, but it hops between islets on eight bridges and several causeways with open sea on both sides. The Storseisundet Bridge, which curves and rises so sharply that from one angle it appears to end in mid-air, is the centrepiece.

The drive

It runs between Vevang and Kårvåg on county road 64, between Molde and Kristiansund. In calm weather it is a short, pretty drive. In an autumn storm the waves break over the carriageway, which is when the photographs get taken.

On its own it will not fill a morning, so treat it as one stop on a western Norway loop. It is about two and a half hours from Trollstigen, and the coastal road onward to Bud is a good, quiet drive in its own right.

In your Lotus

This is one to drive slowly with the roof off. The speed limit is 80 km/h and there is little reason to go faster. The salt spray is real, so wash the car afterwards, paying attention to the aluminium suspension components and the brake discs.

Watch out for

  • Strong crosswinds on the bridges can move a 900 kg car around noticeably.
  • Tourists stop in the road to take photographs. Use the marked lay-bys.
  • Norwegian speeding fines are severe.
