The Clocks Go Back: Lotus Headlamps and the New MOT Rule on LED Bulbs
Darker evenings start today, and LED replacement bulbs can now pass the MOT in halogen headlamps if approved. What that means for an older Lotus.
British Summer Time ended at 2am today, and from this week the drive home will be in the dark for many owners. It is a good moment to look at the headlamps, and there is also a rule change to know about if you have been thinking of fitting LED bulbs.
What has changed at the MOT
Until now, LED replacement bulbs in a headlamp designed for halogen usually meant an MOT failure, because testers had no practical way to tell an approved LED bulb from one that was not.
In a bulletin sent on 8 October, the DVSA said testers can now pass LED replacement bulbs in halogen headlamps, as long as the bulbs are ECE approved and come with an approval sticker. The manufacturer supplies the sticker in the packaging. It has to be fitted permanently to the car, in the engine bay for example, where the tester can see it. The change appears in section 4.14 of the MOT inspection manual from 14 October 2026. It applies to cars, vans and three-wheelers.
The important word is approved. An unapproved conversion will still fail, whatever the online listing says, so check the packaging before you buy.
Why it matters on a small Lotus
Most Elises and Exiges use halogen headlamps, and some give little light on an unlit road. Before buying new bulbs, check the basics, which often make a bigger difference.
- Lens condition. Plastic lenses and covers go yellow and cloudy with age, scattering the light. Polishing helps; crazed plastic needs replacing.
- Condensation. Misted headlamps are a known issue on these cars (see our recalls and known issues guide). Water inside the unit dulls the light and corrodes the reflector.
- Aim. A headlamp pointing slightly too low wastes much of its output. Lamps can be knocked out of line by work on the front clam, and a garage can check the aim quickly.
- Voltage. Halogen bulbs give noticeably less light at lower voltage. Tired earth connections and a weak battery both play a part, which is another reason to keep the battery healthy over winter.
Before you fit anything
If you do go the LED route, buy an approved product, fit the sticker, and have the aim checked afterwards, because an LED source can sit in a slightly different place from the filament it replaces and change the beam. A beam that dazzles oncoming drivers is still a failure, whatever the bulb.
If you are planning a long trip this winter, add the lights to the checks in our road trip preparation guide. Owners of the Elise S2 and Exige S2 will find most of these jobs easy to do at home.
