# Road Spotlight: The Tail of the Dragon as the Colour Reaches the Valleys

Late October is when autumn colour usually reaches the low ground around Deals Gap. How to time a run on US 129, and what to watch for.

Earlier this month we followed the colour down the [Blue Ridge Parkway](/trails/blue-ridge-parkway/). By the end of October it has reached the valleys, and one of the roads it reaches last is the best-known driving road in the eastern United States: US 129 at Deals Gap, the [Tail of the Dragon](/trails/tail-of-the-dragon/).

## Why the Dragon turns late

The National Park Service says autumn colour in Great Smoky Mountains National Park usually develops above 4,000 ft from early to mid-October, while the lower and middle slopes are at their best between mid-October and early November. It adds that the timing varies from year to year and that peak dates are hard to predict.

The Dragon sits low. Its 318 curves in 11 miles run along the edge of the park and top out at around 600 m, or roughly 2,000 ft, well below the height where the colour starts. That puts it in the later window, which makes this week and next a reasonable time to go. If the trees at Deals Gap are still green, give it a few days.

## The roads either side

The Cherohala Skyway, a short drive south, climbs to over 5,000 ft with wide, fast sweepers. Being much higher, it turns earlier, so by now expect bare branches near the top and colour only on the lower slopes. NC 28 runs south from Deals Gap towards Fontana and is far quieter than US 129 itself. Linking the three makes a full day without repeating the Dragon over and over.

## Driving it in a Lotus

The limit on US 129 is 30 mph, and officers from both Tennessee and North Carolina enforce it. At that speed the road is still a pleasure in a light car: the corners are tight and the direction changes are constant, which is exactly where an [Elise](/models/elise-s2/) or [Exige](/models/exige-s2/) feels at home. An [Emira](/models/emira/) is wider but still well suited to it.

Colour season brings more traffic, and weekends add heavy motorcycle numbers. Go midweek and start early. There are almost no places to overtake, so settle in behind whoever is in front. Leaves on the road are greasy when damp, and shaded corners stay cold and slippery well into the morning at this time of year. Vehicles over 30 ft are banned, but the odd one still appears and uses both lanes.

## Before you set off

Road conditions in the area have changed often since Hurricane Helene, so check the Tennessee and North Carolina transport departments for current closures on the morning you travel. Our [road trip preparation guide](/guides/road-trip-preparation/) covers the checks worth doing on the car before a long run, and the [events page](/events/) lists club meets if you would rather go in company.
